My Poetics fall through the cracks somewhere between these pavers-of-the-way:
Lyn Hejinian, Jean Valentine, Lucie Brock Broido, Brenda Hillman, Laura Jensen,
Which is to say that the work of these poets keeps my nose to the poetic grindstone.
Which is to say, I’m a rock hound; I have wanted my own gravel pit since I was ten.
Here’s a poem about that:

Poetry
I empty pocketfuls of attractive stones
into my tumbler (polishing can take forever).
The sound of them inside the drum
is my rainstick, or the rattle of a small
window, its sill lined with beach glass
lets in more light. On my dashboard
they add good clatter to dull drives.
I set them on high shelves and embed them
in the aggregates. Slices of my best agates
will soon display from here to nowhere.
